Rua Áurea, the Golden Street, sits in the heart of the Pombaline grid, two streets from Rua Augusta and five minutes from the Tagus riverfront. The most central position in Lisbon: Chiado is a ten-minute walk uphill, the Castelo tuk-tuk leaves from just up the road, and Time Out Market is twelve minutes on foot along the river. Our most-recommended first-night restaurant. Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa's 1-Michelin-star restaurant in Chiado. Excellent Portuguese cooking in a warm stone-walled room. Less formal than Belcanto but equally serious about the food. Ten minutes uphill on foot, or 5 minutes by Uber.
A Lisbon institution near Rossio, open since 1936. Reliable seafood and Portuguese cooking in a formal but comfortable room. One of the most dependable restaurants in the city for a proper dinner without any surprises.
The best pastel de nata within walking distance. They bake continuously and you can watch them being made through the counter window. Eat at the counter with an espresso. 10 minutes uphill, easily combined with a walk through Chiado.
A large food market at Mercado da Ribeira bringing together stalls from many Lisbon restaurants. Very touristy but the food quality is good. Works well on a first day when you want to try several things. Twelve minutes along the river on foot.
The oldest pastry shop in Lisbon, on Praça da Figueira just three minutes away, open since 1829. Beautiful traditional interior with display cases of Portuguese pastries. The pastéis de nata are underrated and very good. The best easy morning option near the property.
The original pastel de Belém, made to the same recipe since 1837. Worth going once, for the pastry, the beautiful tiled interior, and the neighbourhood. Combine with Jerónimos Monastery directly opposite and MAAT for a good half-day.
The walk Lisbon was designed around. Head south along Rua Áurea towards Rua Augusta, then all the way to the Triumphal Arch and the riverfront at Praça do Comércio. The scale of the square, with the Tagus behind it, is one of the genuinely impressive urban experiences in Europe. Do this on your first afternoon.
Portuguese contemporary art in a former convent building in Chiado. Manageable size, always calm, good temporary exhibitions. The closest decent museum to the property. Good for a couple of hours after a nata at Manteigaria, practically on the same street.
Free design and fashion museum in the old Baixa bank buildings, three minutes away. An interesting collection in an architecturally interesting building, good for an hour between other things, or on a rainy morning when you want something close.
Worth a morning out of the centre at least once. Pastéis de Belém for breakfast, then Jerónimos Monastery (before 10am the cloister is often almost empty), then MAAT for contemporary architecture and river views. Take an Uber each way.
Yes. It's a pedestrian street in the middle of Baixa's grid, well-lit and busy with restaurant terraces most evenings. Like anywhere touristy, keep an eye on your bag around Rua Augusta after dark.
Baixa-Chiado, two minutes away, covers the Blue and Green lines — probably the most useful interchange in the city. Rossio station is a five-minute walk if you need the Sintra train.
Rua Augusta and the riverfront fill up from mid-morning to early evening, especially in summer. Áurea itself is one street over and noticeably quieter, even at peak hours.
Yes — it is the most walkable position in Lisbon. The Castelo, Chiado, Alfama, and the river are all under fifteen minutes on foot, and Baixa-Chiado metro covers the rest.
